Name Background and Experiences

Dr. Robert Malloy
Professor and Department Chair, Plastics Eng. at UMass-Lowell
Malloy holds 14 U.S. and two European patents. He has been the principle or co-principle investigator for more than 70 funded research projects or grants. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 technical papers. Malloy earned his bachelor’s degree in plastics engineering from UMass Lowell in 1979 and his doctorate in polymer science from the school in Lowell, Mass., in 1987. He joined the faculty in 1988, and since 2002 has headed the plastics engineering department, one of the top programs in the nation. An SPE activist, Malloy was founding editor of SPE’s Journal of Injection Molding Technology. A plastics history buff, Malloy also worked with co-inductee Jay Gardiner and SPI President Bill Carteaux to find a permanent home for the National Plastics Center. The Plastics Hall of Fame headquarters is being established at UMass Lowell.

Prof. David Kazmer
Department of Plastics Eng. UMass-Lowell & Mech. & Ind. Eng, UMass-Amherst
Dr. David O. Kazmer is researching advanced capabilities in design of manufacturing processes, focusing on molding process simulation and development as well as product and machine design towards integrated product and process engineering. Teaching courses pertaining to process engineering, mold design, process control, and process simulation. He is also an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Mech. & Ind. Eng, Amherst Campus. Dr. Kazmer is the recipient of over a dozen different recognition awards, an inventor with over 20 patents, and the author of more than two hundred publications including two books. Much of his academic work is motivated by industry experiences as an engineer and manager.

Philip Greco
Applications Development Engineer at Trexel Inc.
BS Industrial Technology University of Lowell 1989
MS Plastics Engineering University of Mass. Lowell 1997Over 20 years of experience working in the Plastics industry in New England. Predominantly Process Engineering, and Project Management positions in injection molding. Processing Engineer for TRW, Westminster, MA in 1992, Processing Engineer for GE Plastics, Pittsfield, MA in 1995,  Processing Engineer for Avery Dennison, Fitchburg, MA in 1999, Sr. Plastics Engineer for Premium Power Corp., North Reading, MA. in 2003Current position: Applications Development Engineer for Trexel Inc.,Wilmington, MA in 2011. This position requires a great deal of customer interaction to develop part and mold designs to maximize the efficacy of the MuCell® process. Process Engineering is provided with production and development tooling and run at the Trexel Laboratory in Wilmington, MA to determine whether production scale-up is feasible. Process Engineering support and machine installation and integration at customer facilities, as well as process and equipment training are additional responsibilities of this position. It is rewarding to be on the cutting edge of many technologies that add productivity, and quality to molded product. In this climate of frequent cost increases for polymer precursor feed stocks, more and more polymer converters are approaching Trexel for weight and cost savings. In many instances, the tertiary benefits of microcellular foam such as sink mark reduction, dimensional stability, and flatness and warpage improvement justify the equipment costs.

Prof. Fang Lai
Department of Plastics Eng. at UMass-Lowell
Dr. Francis Lai is a faculty member in the Plastics Engineering Department at UMass Lowell. He teaches courses in process control, processing theory and CAE. An active researcher in the area of computer process control, artificial intelligence, experimental design and SPC/SQC, Dr. Lai serves as a consultant to companies in the processing field.

Dr. Anthony Yang
Chief Technology Officer of CoreTech System (Moldex3D)
Dr. Anthony Yang has been the core developer of Moldex3D and Board Member of the Moldex3D company. Dr. Yang is currently at the position of Chief Technology Officer to devote his time in coordinating between the users and development team. With his dedicated contribution, the first 3D solvers for molding process commercial software, were then developed and populated by the industry worldwide.

Vijay KudchadkarMr. Kudchadkar has received a BE (Polymer Engineering) from University of Pune, India and a MS (Plastics Engineering) from UMass Lowell. He has over 7 years of experience in utilizing injection molding simulation to optimize part and mold designs, hot-runners, manifold, and troubleshooting. Vijay has performed over 500 simulations on injection molded parts, hot-runners, and molds. He is proficient with molding simulation CAE packages. Vijay has numerous publications and four (4) patents in plastics processing.
